[ Canada ] A federal government report says the massive [mountain] pine beetle infestation in B.C. is threatening other species of trees and could spread right across the country. The pest is normally found in lodgepole pine, but the report says it now threatens the jack pine of the boreal forest, which could move the infestation nationwide. Forecasters estimate by 2013 about 80 per cent of B.C. ‘ s mature pine will be affected. The epidemic is considered the largest such infestation ever recorded in North America .
