Chattanooga Creek Delisted from EPA Superfund List

A section of the Chattanooga Creek was delisted from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List in October, confirming that its cleanup reaches federal standards. The creek was previously labeled as a “Superfund site,” a classification that allows the EPA to clean contaminated sites and require whoever is culpable to pay. The Chattanooga Creek remediation project finished in 2008, but the site was kept on the list for monitoring purposes. In 2019, 27 sites were removed entirely or partially from the federal priorities list, the largest amount in a single year since 2001. — By Rachael Kelley
