This afternoon, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC, permission to resume construction of its dangerous and unnecessary pipeline project, following authorization from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that was granted late last week under the direction of Congress as part of the debt ceiling bill signed into law on June 3. This action was taken by FERC even as multiple legal challenges to the pipeline are pending and as questions about the constitutionality of the MVP provisions of the debt ceiling bill come into play.
Statement by Peter Anderson, Virginia Policy Director:
“It is foolhardy of FERC to take this step while serious questions about the legality of some of Mountain Valley’s permits are still unresolved. We know that the MVP cannot be built in compliance with our nation’s bedrock environmental laws — which is why the company and its supporters went to the extraordinary length of having Congress attempt to sidestep them.
“We will continue to stand by community members and hold MVP, LLC, accountable using any and all available means.”
