Calling on Legislators for Action in Washington, D.C.

Black lung disease is an epidemic in our region, one that is preventable with proper worker protections. From July 22 to 24, we joined a delegation of over 150 miners, widows and families and other groups from the region on a historic trip to Washington, D.C., to ask members of Congress to restore funding to the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund and take steps to stem the preventable surge in this fatal disease. And in June, we traveled to the capitol alongside other organizations and people who live in areas troubled by abandoned mines to ask legislators to co-sponsor the RECLAIM Act, H.R. 2156. The bill would fast-track reclamation of abandoned mines at sites that have economic development potential, cleaning damaged land and water, employing local workers and giving new projects a jump-start.
