Jazmyine Harrell – Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Intern, Summer 2024
Jazmyine Harrell is located in Appalachia, VA., but has lived all throughout the Southwest Virginia area. They have completed an Associate degree in Business Management at Mountain Empire Community College, and is currently working on getting their B.S. in Environmental Studies at Emory & Henry University. They have a strong passion for environmental justice, especially in the Appalachian region, and they are excited to have a hands on opportunity with Appalachian Voices to be able to express this passion.
Lara Howell – Communications Team and Federal Team Intern, Summer 2024
Lara is originally from Charlottesville, Va., but spent most of her life in central Texas (far, far away from the mountains). She is happy to be returning to Virginia as a rising senior at the University of Virginia, where she studies Global Environments & Sustainability and Religious Studies. Lara is interested in sustainable agricultural practices and hunger relief. After graduating, she plans to pursue a career in policy work. She is excited to work with and learn from the team at AppVoices!
Jacob Lineberry – Data Research Intern, Summer 2024
Jacob grew up in Shenandoah County, where he developed a love and appreciation for the Blue Ridge Mountains. During his childhood exploring the outdoors, his curiosity pushed him to understand how and why things work, and led him to a career in physics and education. He taught high school physics for the past 5 years in Washington, DC, before relocating to Roanoke, VA to reconnect with the mountains. As he leaves the classroom, he’s excited to serve as an educator in new and exciting capacities and share knowledge about climate change, equity, and opportunity in Appalachia.
Matt Moss – Operations & Outreach Intern, Summer 2024
Matt Moss grew up in the Raleigh, NC area and has a background in sales and administrative support. Observing the recent rampant ecological disruption and blatant disregard for the communities impacted by such practices motivated him to pursue organizing against those practices as a career. He is excited to work alongside Appalachian Voices in their mission and is eager to see where things go from there!
Locke Revels — Operations & Outreach Intern, Summer 2024
A North Carolina native, Locke completed a B.S. in Environmental Sciences from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2017 and has since worked in a number of sectors exploring the systemic intersections of environmental research, justice, consulting and social engagement. He is passionate about grassroots organizing for human-environmental interdependency and well being, and Boone is a perfect home for him to apply this passion. He enjoys all aspects of participation in Southern foodways and has kept some houseplants alive. Locke’s ideal biome is a river, field, holler, dirt road or rhododendron dell leading to friends or nature’s solitude somewhere in Appalachia or the greater southeast.
Kamille Sharma – Tennessee Energy Justice Fellow, Summer 2024
Kamille is a master’s student studying the environmental planning and management and has some background in energy justice. She has also worked on raising awareness about healthy watersheds and loves nature, in particular creek-walking or hiking through the woods. Kamille is excited about working with Appalachian Voices and learning about energy. She is hoping to use what she is learning this summer in future work with the environment.
Macey Sheppard – Coal Impacts Team Assistant, Spring 2024
Macey Sheppard is located in Wise, Va., and is the Coal Impacts Team Assistant for Spring 2024. She has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science Legal Studies from Virginia Tech and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Higher Education from Liberty University. She has a strong passion for advocacy, education and environmental politics, specifically focusing on the Appalachian region. She is eager to learn, grow and become more educated in this field and hopes that this opportunity will enhance her knowledge of the issues surrounding Appalachian communities.
